Kona Coffee History
Coffee was first brought to the west by a French naval officer named Gabriel Mathiew de
Clieu. Gabriel was said to have stolen a plant from the Jardin de Plants (Garden of
Plants) in Paris and in a hazardous voyage from France to Martinique he planted the tree
in his plantation. This plant is said to be the forbearer of nearly all the coffee
currently grown in the Americas.
In 1813, coffee was initially planted on the island of Oahu, Hawaii by Don Paulo Marin.
However these plantings were unsuccessful and it would not be until 1845 some thirty years
after the reign of King Kamehameha II that coffee would take hold in Hawaii.
King Kamehameha II did set in motion a series of events that would lead to Hawaii’s
eventual coffee stardom however. The king, his wife, and a party of royals made a voyage
to England during which the king and his wife died from measles. The Governor Boki of Oahu
(a surviving member of the voyage), while in England noticed that the coffee houses were
incredibly popular. Therefore during a break in the journey back to Hawaii in Rio de
Janeiro, Boki picked up a number of coffee plants for transport back to Hawaii.
